Top 10 Virtual Worlds
===========================================================
For VGTT's very first top ten list we will be going over the current days best virtual worlds.
A virtual world is not just a game setting in which to play on but it is a rich environment brimming with life and places to be explored. So here we go for the best of the best.
#10
-World Of Warcraft
Although one of the most popular and successful games in all of the world the actual world of warcraft is quite small and limited compared to the next 9 games. Although that being said World Of Warcraft still has a large world to explore and conquer. With the latest expansions WoW has become quite larger and has brought itself more to a worlds status but in time we can only hope it will reach the massive size as some of the older (and newer games)
#9
-Everquest
Everquest has earned their place on this top 10 list simply by the sheer size of their world and the required work it took to get to the areas of the world. With its countless number of expansions everquest was and still is considered one of the most successful MMORPG's in the world. A bit outdated but still a great game to try out if you like exploration and customization.
#8
-Runescape
Oh no the terrible runescape making its way onto a top 10 list!? Blasphemy!? No now sit down and hear me out. Runescape is one of the oldest and most established MMO's on the market to this date. Its world is giant and there are so many things to do in it. Unlike other games almost every single object in this game has an action and a reaction. You need skills to jump over that wall, or skills to chop down that tree or set that object on fire. All in all runescape has one of the most immersible worlds ever.
#7
-Fallen Earth
Forget elves, stop playing with your wand, put down your crystals because this isn't your daddy's MMORPG and it is one of the most impressive MMORPG's to come by my view in the past several years. This is the apocalypse and your sole goal is to survive in the gigantic wasteland. There is no fast travel, no teleporting, no flying, the wasteland is a harsh mistress and you will obey! The game brings in simply massiv elandscapes, underground caves that are almost as large as other games entire zones. This is a game for those who truly like to explore and survive.
#6
-Final Fantasy 11
Final Fantasy is such a large in depth world, almost to a fault. With FFXI's harsh and unforgiving system of causing you to lose levels on death and monsters that will chase you all the way to the end of a map until you zone it can be a very bad thing to have such a massive world. It would literally take over 30 minutes to walk from one side of a map to another. Yes chocobo's were an option but when you got off of one it would leave you stranded there to walk the massive landscape. So note that not all giant worlds are good ones. But for the fact that the world was so immersible and massive it does earn its place at #6.
#5
-Vanguard Saga Of Heroes
Vanguard has been around for a decent chunk of time and with its growth comes one of the largest virtual game worlds ever created. I still recall taking nearly 30 minutes to make my way between towns. On top of the massive size of the world it also houses a very nice clan city system that many new games are trying to emulate.
#4
-DarkFall Online
Darkfall is a new MMO recently released but already it is showing promise, maybe not in the graphics or animation department but certainly in the environment and city department. The clan cities are an impressive feature especially with the fact that it is all open PVP, making the cities even more needed then in any other game.
#3
-Eve Online
Ah yes the one true underdog of the MMORPG world that came out to be one of the best of the best. Eve online like SWG is not a virtual world but a virtual universe. Eve captures the feeling of being small in the big view of the universe. You pilot a spacecraft in this game and being primarily a pvp game you are constantly in danger. You can be blown up and your ship taken at any time. But this is where the massive universe is your friend. There are separate sectors that corps will fight over to control in an ever changing galaxy. If you truly want to feel like you are in a massive game play Eve.
#2
-Star Wars Galaxies
Even with the NGU star wars galaxies remains as one of the largest and most versatile virtual worlds ever designed. Except it isn't a virtual world, it is a virtual galaxy. With the ability to colonize and create your own player cities with your clan or guild and having every single item in the game have an on world model to be used in decorating your home SWG is by far one of the best MMORPG's in terms of virtual worlds for the sheer fact that you can live in this world. I am constantly tired of all the MMO's anymore where you are just a wanderer and has a sole purpose to kill things, SWG gives you a feeling of accomplishment when you get your first home set up and decorated. I still remember all the countless hours I spent decorating my perfect home.
#1
- Second Life
Unlike most "games" of this genre it is anything but a game. Second life is currently the closest thing we have created that could be considered a virtual world. In every sense of the meaning Second Life is in fact a second life. Not only is every single part of the world and your avatar customizable but anything you could imagine is possible and probably exists. With the vast amount of player and creators in game there is so many places to visit and explore and with the never ending changes to every area and land changes there will never be a shortage of areas to discover. All in all Second Life is the largest and greatest virtual world ever created. Thumbs up to Linden Labs.
That concludes the first VGTT post. Check back next week for a new list of top 10s!
